Community Biodiversity Management in Central Western Ghats, India
The study described in this report was undertaken to characterize CBM activities in a forested landscape of the Central Western Ghats in India and in the process to analyze the level of empowerment existing in the community regarding social/cultural, legal, and economic aspects.

The study was conducted near Sirsi in the Central Western Ghats, Karnataka state, southern India, which is recognized as one of the hot spots of biological diversity in the world. Standard questioners, meetings and workshops with the communities and different stakeholders such as development agency,conservation stakeholder, members of local governance were adopted to identify the elements of CBM in the forested landscapes of central Western Ghats, to gain understanding of the socio-economic characteristics of the farm households dependent on cultivated / wild resources, to assess the institutional and non-institutional factors that influence the maintenance of diversity and to assess the level of empowerment in social/cultural, economic, and legal aspects.
