Sequencing Africa's Orphan Crops for Better Food Security

Baobab: the First in Line

The organization plans to sequence numerous neglected and underutilized crop species that are critical to nutrition and livelihood security in Africa including finger millet, African eggplant, okra, amaranth, guava, taro, jackfruit, acacia, chocolate berries, shea nut, sweet bush mango and groundnut. They are starting off the initiative by sequencing Baobab - a nutritious, hardy and multi-purpose tree that grows across sub-Saharan Africa.
