Agricultural intensification today is increasingly relying on a narrow range of crops. Of the several hundred thousand known plant species, some 120 are cultivated for human food, but just nine supply over 75 percent of global plant-derived energy intake, and, of these, only three—wheat, rice and maize—account for more than half. Our dependence on this relatively small number of food species raises serious concerns about the sustainability of feeding the world today and in the future.
